The three-story bronzed stucco mansion, built in 1854, featured five hulking marble fireplaces, servants’ quarters, and a grand white staircase that coiled from the living area to the bedrooms.

It was designed by Francis Cugat, a Spanish-born artist who did Hollywood movie posters, and depicts the eyes of a woman hanging over the carnival lights of Coney Island. The centerpiece was a French-mannered, axial sunken garden, with water terraces, hedges, and parterres leading to the grand entrance. Myths abound on which mansions inspired the Gatsby castle and the Buchanan home. Let’s start, as the novel's Nick Carraway did, with Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Some of these properties were well beyond even Jay Gatsby’s means – Oheka Castle, for example, sits on a 443-acre lot, features 127 rooms and 109,000 square feet of living space, and is the second-largest private home in the U.S.
